Music & Adaptive Audio for Narrative-Driven Games
Original music, adaptive systems and FMOD implementation for atmospheric interactive worlds.
From Score to System
Hi, I'm Joff Winks, a composer and adaptive music specialist based in Oxford, UK.
I work with game developers to create music that strengthens storytelling, deepens atmosphere and responds dynamically to player actions. My approach combines composition and implementation, allowing music to become an active part of the player's experience rather than simply a layer added at the end of production.
Most recently, I spent over three years composing and implementing the soundtrack for Arctic Awakening, a first-person narrative adventure developed by GoldFire Studios.
Featured Project: Arctic Awakening
Arctic Awakening is a story-driven survival adventure set in the Alaskan wilderness following a mysterious plane crash.
The score combines orchestral, electronic and historical instruments to explore themes of isolation, memory and artificial consciousness. Alongside composing the music, I designed and implemented adaptive systems in FMOD that respond to gameplay, environmental conditions and narrative progression.
“Joff’s work on Arctic Awakening went far beyond composition. His music became part of the emotional architecture of the game.”
— James Simpson, Founder & Creative Director, GoldFire Studios

A spacious cue built around electric guitar, bowed guitar textures and evolving layers, exploring the feeling of discovery and inhabiting a place.
Adaptive Music & Implementation
I enjoy working closely with development teams to design musical systems that support gameplay and narrative.
Examples include:
• Dynamic layering systems that evolve as the player explores the world
• Interactive transitions that respond to player actions
• Environmental music systems driven by game state
• FMOD implementation integrated directly into gameplay mechanics
For me, implementation is not simply a technical step. It is part of the creative process that helps transform music into a living part of the game.

Music for Places, Not Scenes
An exploration of how music can help players inhabit a world through atmosphere, exploration and environmental storytelling.
Let's Talk
I'm always interested in meeting developers, creative directors and producers working on atmospheric, narrative-focused and visually distinctive games.
If you're attending Develop Brighton, I'd love to hear about what you're building.
