Private Eye Casefiles: The Wooden Lady

Private Eye Casefiles: The Wooden Lady is a mobile VR game developed for the Samsung Gear VR. Serving as a prequel to the PC version of Private Eye, the story takes place five years before the events of the main game.

Players once again step into the role of Detective Sam Sutherland as he investigates his first case — the apparent suicide of wealthy recluse Robert Rosentelle.

Using a detailed diorama of the Rosentelle mansion, players examine the crime scene by rotating the miniature house on a turntable, revealing each room in turn and uncovering hidden clues as they piece together the mystery.

Bringing the experience to life on mobile VR required creative thinking and technical compromise. Performance limitations shaped many design decisions, and I worked closely with the developer to ensure the music remained lightweight — keeping file sizes small and manageable for use on a mobile device without sacrificing atmosphere or impact.

Music plays a central role in The Wooden Lady. From the eerie soundscapes of attic and basement scenes to the warm, inviting orchestral jazz of the investigation room, the score was composed with immersion at its core. In virtual reality, music can deepen presence in unique ways, and here it helps guide emotion, tension, and discovery throughout the experience.

Private Eye Casefiles: The Wooden Lady was later recognised as a finalist in Oculus’ Mobile VR Jam.
